Lyria 3.5 arrived in Google Flow Music on July 29 with improvements Google highlights across musicality, lyrics, vocals and creative control. That makes the obvious question unavoidable: is it now a serious Suno v5.5 alternative?

The useful answer is not found in a launch demo. A creator needs to know which platform can carry an idea from a clear brief to a usable, revisable and documented result.

First, separate Lyria from Flow Music

Google describes Lyria 3.5 as an advance in musicality, lyrics, vocals and creative control. It says the model can create richer melodic structures, produce higher-quality lyrics with better prompt adherence and structural awareness, deliver more expressive vocals with improved pronunciation, and give users easier control over tempo and duration. Google DeepMind currently describes Lyria 3.5 as its most advanced music-generation model, capable of coherent tracks up to three minutes long.

The bigger update is what surrounds the model. Current Google Flow Music documentation now describes targeted music editing as an active workflow, not merely an announced direction. Creators can use conversational instructions to change structure, instruments, mix choices and vocal treatment, and Flow Music's remix tools include Replace, Extend and Cover.

Flow Music also exposes composition controls for areas such as lyrics, sound and details. That second point matters more than the headline. Many AI music tools can make an impressive first result. Far fewer let a creator preserve what worked while repairing what did not.

Flow Music now has its own personalization layer

Google is also building continuity into the production relationship itself. Flow Music lets creators personalize the AI producer with persistent instructions, custom Google Flows and optional memories from prior Flow Music conversations. Google currently offers producer modes identified as Instrument, Ghostwriter and Producer.

This is useful, but it should not be confused with Suno's artist-identity tools. Remembering how you prefer to work is different from giving you a verified reusable voice or a custom music model trained on an authorized catalogue. That difference remains central to this comparison.

The six tests that define real creative control

A feature list can make almost any generator sound powerful. A professional decision needs a better standard.

1. Brief control

Can you define the purpose, audience, emotion, genre, vocal character, structure, duration and elements to avoid before generation? A prompt is useful only when important instructions survive competing requests.

2. Generation control

Does the result follow the brief, or merely resemble its genre words? Test the intro, section order, lyric subject, lead and backing roles, dynamic build and ending separately.

True control is not the number of settings shown before generation. It is how much of your intention survives from the brief to the finished asset.

Where Lyria 3.5 and Flow Music could beat Suno

Lyria's most promising advantage is not simply that Google says the music sounds better. It is the combination of a stronger music model with Flow Music's conversational refinement environment.

A creator can now target parts of a song for changes rather than treating the whole generation as disposable. Google documents workflows for replacing a selected section, extending from a point in a song, creating a cover, changing instrumentation, adjusting structure and making mix-style requests through conversation. Lyria 3.5 matters because Google is now competing on the elements that determine whether AI music can be directed: lyric quality, vocal expression, structure, tempo, duration and targeted revision. Flow Music matters because it turns those model capabilities into a broader production workflow.
