Use AI as a Developmental Editor, Not Just a Copy Editor

AI Writing Assistance · Editing & Judgment · Public Lesson 25

This block is about using AI without outsourcing editorial judgment: diagnose the problem first, make the decision visible, then edit.

Grammar correction is useful, but the bigger value of AI can come earlier: testing structure, logic, pacing and reader understanding.

The Jack Righteous approach

Ask questions about the draft before asking for sentence-level fixes.

Use this workflow

  1. Check whether the opening creates the right expectation.
  2. Test whether the sections arrive in the best order.
  3. Look for unsupported claims, missing examples or repeated ideas.
  4. Identify sections that are doing the same job twice.
  5. Only copy-edit after the structure works.

Why this matters

AI can make a draft look finished before the underlying problem is solved. If the issue is meaning, structure or evidence, a smoother sentence may actually make the problem harder to see. Diagnose first. Then choose the lightest intervention that fixes the real issue.

A prompt you can actually use

Copy and adapt:

Act as a developmental editor. Evaluate purpose, structure, progression, missing context, repetition, unsupported claims and reader friction. Do not rewrite sentences unless I specifically ask after reviewing your diagnosis.

What a useful AI response should do

A useful response should make the editorial decision more visible. It should tell you what changed, what is uncertain, what needs evidence and what still requires judgment. The goal is not a prettier draft at any cost. The goal is a better-controlled draft.

Your five-minute exercise

The strongest structural choice is: ______________________________

The weakest section order is: ______________________________

The repeated idea is: ______________________________

The issue that matters more than grammar is: ______________________________

What the human still decides

AI can identify patterns, gaps, possible objections and revision options. You still decide what is true, what is fair, what is strong enough to publish, what deserves qualification, and which version actually represents your position.
