AUDACITY 4.0 EFFECTS & PLUGINS · UPDATED SEPTEMBER 6, 2026
Audacity Realtime Effects & Plugins
Audacity 4.0 is now the current release. Realtime effects can run on individual tracks and on the master while you work, remain adjustable during playback, and are rendered into the exported audio rather than permanently rewriting the source waveform as soon as you add them.
Track effects vs master effects
Track effect: process one track, such as a vocal compressor or EQ. Master effect: process the combined mix after individual track gain, pan and track effects.
A safer processing workflow
- Get the edit and rough balance working first.
- Add one realtime effect for one named problem.
- Bypass it and level-match your judgment.
- Build the smallest effect stack that solves the problem.
- Use master effects only for mix-wide needs.
- Keep the
.aup4project if you want the effect stack editable.
What changed in Audacity 4
Audacity 4 rebuilt the interface on Qt, added per-track playback/recording meters, and keeps realtime effects as a central part of the new track workflow. Preset handling is now more consistent across built-in, destructive and realtime effects.
Current plugin guidance
The Audacity 4 release notes explicitly list VST3, Nyquist, LV2 on Linux and Audio Units on macOS as supported formats. Audacity's newer manual also documents Nyquist plugins and the Plugin Manager. Plugin availability can still vary by operating system, architecture and whether a particular plugin exposes a compatible interface.
Do not transfer an old plugin list blindly. If a tutorial depends on VAMP, LADSPA, scripting, macros or another Audacity 3 extension path, verify that exact workflow in your current 4.x build before you make it part of a repeatable production process.
AI plugins are optional, not the identity of Audacity
Audacity has also offered optional AI-assisted add-ons such as OpenVINO tools on supported systems. Treat those as optional extensions with their own version/platform requirements—not as a reason to turn the Audacity hub into another AI generator course.
What JR creators should do during the 4.0 transition
- Keep a working Audacity 3 project/build available if a release-critical plugin or command has not made the jump.
- Test the exact plugin on a duplicate project before committing a session to Audacity 4.
- Save converted projects as
.aup4while retaining the original.aup3file if you may need to go back. - Prefer transferable mixing decisions—what problem the EQ, compressor or limiter is solving—over memorizing one menu location.
