How to Use Midjourney for AI Music Cover Art

AI Visuals for Creators · Updated October 24, 2026 · Midjourney V8.2

Your cover should feel like the song before anyone presses play. Midjourney can help you explore ideas quickly. Your job is to choose what fits the music, direct the final composition, fix the details and deliver artwork your distributor can accept.

This guide takes one music project from song brief to a finished square cover, with current Midjourney features, reusable prompts, album-series consistency, typography, commercial-rights checks and export requirements.

Important: A platform's permission to use an AI image commercially does not itself establish exclusive copyright or clear other parties' trademarks, photographs, likenesses or artwork. The image still needs review before a public music release.

1. Turn your song into a visual brief

Do not begin with a style word like cinematic. Begin with a decision about the music. Listen once for the emotional direction and once for the image or symbol that captures it. One strong idea usually beats a crowded image of every lyric.

Fill in your brief

  • Song or album title: __
  • Emotional promise: __
  • Main subject or symbol: __
  • Art medium: illustration, photo, painting or collage
  • Three to five palette colors: __
  • Room for title/artist name: top, bottom or none
  • Listener takeaway: what should they understand in one second?

Worked example: a resilience song

Emotion: hope after hardship.

Metaphor: first light beyond a dark mountain pass.

Palette: charcoal, warm gold and stone gray.

Composition: one horizon; no human face; clear negative space.

Goal: recognizably hopeful, not a generic motivational stock image.

Single versus album: A single may capture one lyrical moment. An album needs an identity broad enough to carry the track collection. Save this brief because it becomes the reference when you compare generations.

2. Use Midjourney's current V8.2 workflow

As of October 24, 2026, Midjourney's default image model is V8.2. Start directly on midjourney.com or use Discord if you prefer. Discord is no longer a required onboarding step. The V8.2 Edit Model replaces several older reference/editing workflows.

Step 1

Set your output shape

Choose the Square aspect ratio or add --ar 1:1. It controls the ratio, not the pixel dimensions. A 1:1 image is essential for a standard album-art master.

Step 2

Describe one coherent image

Name the symbol, atmosphere, medium, palette, lighting and focal point. Avoid lists of conflicting genres, art movements and camera angles. Use Midjourney's current web controls or the --v 8.2 parameter to set the model explicitly.

Step 3

Explore a controlled variation

Compare a few candidates. Change the light or framing before changing the whole concept. Save the selected prompt and source image. A seed may help you test, but it is not a cross-version promise of the same composition.

3. Four copy-ready music cover prompts

Replace the symbols, colors and emotion to match your own song. The prompts intentionally exclude finished lettering so you can add the exact title and artist name afterward.

Roots reggae

Resilience and renewal

Use one grounded symbol; avoid defaulting to stereotyped genre imagery.

A weathered flag on a coastal ridge at first light, roots reggae single cover, hand-painted textured illustration, deep forest green and warm amber with charcoal shadows, restrained symbolism, one strong central silhouette, soft ocean haze, quiet open sky for final typography, square composition, no people, no text, no logos --ar 1:1 --v 8.2
Gospel soul

Quiet strength

A reverent mood without invented faces or copied religious artwork.

A single shaft of morning light entering an empty rehearsal hall, gospel soul single cover, cinematic photographic still life, walnut wood and honey gold with soft black shadows, fine dust in the light, calm central focal point, dignified and intimate, negative space for the release title, no people, no text, no logos --ar 1:1 --v 8.2
Electronic / bass

Energy and pressure

Build a striking physical metaphor instead of generic neon city visuals.

A large circular black speaker cone touching dark water, concentric metallic gold sound ripples, electronic bass music album artwork, refined studio still life, graphite black and warm gold, high contrast focused lighting, minimal symmetrical composition, powerful thumbnail silhouette, no people, no lettering, no logos --ar 1:1 --v 8.2
Lo-fi / acoustic

Memory and atmosphere

A quieter, relatable scene with a clear subject.

An open notebook near a rain-streaked apartment window at blue hour, intimate lo-fi single art, muted indigo and soft copper, warm desk lamp, tactile paper, subtle film grain, thoughtful stillness, one clean visual focal point and open upper area for typography, photographic composition, no words, no logos --ar 1:1 --v 8.2

Reusable formula: song emotion + one visual symbol + art medium + lighting + color roles + subject placement + negative space + square format. Generate the concept first. Precision typography is a separate production step.

4. Compare and refine without losing the song

The thumbnail test

Reduce each candidate to playlist size. If the main symbol disappears, simplify it. Busy covers may look spectacular full screen and ineffective in actual music discovery.

The song-fit test

Compare the art against a specific lyric, chorus or feeling. Can you explain why this image represents the recording without saying “it looks professional”?

The technical test

Look for deformed objects, repetitive artifacts, strange marks, borrowed-looking designs and accidental lettering. Start from the best underlying image.

The layout test

Leave room for correct title and artist text if you need it. A title is optional on many cover designs; good spacing is not optional.

Use Midjourney's V8.2 editing and variation controls to change a region, expand a scene or fix composition. Standard square output begins at 1024 × 1024; available Subtle or Creative upscalers reach 2048 × 2048, as does HD generation. Subtle changes less; Creative can invent detail. Inspect the result after upscaling. Official upscaler guidance.

Practical review

Choose one variable to refine

Save a version labelled cover_direction_v1. Change one important choice, such as crop or lighting, then compare against the brief. Do not simultaneously replace subject, style, palette and layout unless you intentionally restart the direction.

5. Give related releases a consistent visual signature

One successful image is a starting point. For a single/EP/album campaign, define what should remain familiar. Midjourney's Style Reference is useful for carrying palette, medium, texture and lighting between different songs; on the web, add an authorized reference in the Style Reference area. Check which --sref options apply to your version if working in Discord.

Keep consistent

  • Core color roles
  • Lighting and texture
  • Typography placement
  • Artist visual identity
  • Filename and approval record

Allow to change

  • Song-specific symbol
  • Energy and composition
  • Secondary accent colors
  • Emotional intensity
  • Subject and focal object

Use your own or licensed reference images. Learn the broader system in Build a Reusable Color System and How to Keep AI Images Consistent With Your Brand. Midjourney's Style Reference manual covers the feature.

6. Add the release title and artist name accurately

Midjourney can put short text in images when you surround the requested words with double quotation marks, but use a standard image editor for final artist and track typography when accuracy matters. This preserves exact spelling and gives you control over kerning, scale, contrast and position. Midjourney text generation notes.

Production pass

Only add text that serves the release

Check the artist name, exact release title and any collaborator credits against your distributor metadata. Keep important lettering away from the edges. Avoid website URLs, QR codes, store icons, social handles, prices, and unrelated advertising on the artwork.

Compare the finished typography at large, medium and small thumbnail sizes. If it competes with the one main symbol, simplify it. Some strong covers work without printed names or titles.

7. Export a square image that actually meets your distributor's rules

A square image is not automatically large enough for every store. Midjourney V8.2 square SD output is typically 1024 × 1024; HD or supported upscaling reaches 2048 × 2048. A high-quality 3000 × 3000 distribution master therefore requires another resizing/enlargement step or suitable additional artwork processing. Upscaling does not guarantee real new detail.

Destination Official current guidance Working recommendation
DistroKid JPG; minimum 1000 × 1000, ideally 3000 × 3000 square; RGB. Export a checked 3000 × 3000 RGB JPG where practical.
Apple Music Square JPEG or PNG; minimum 1400 × 1400; 3000 × 3000 or larger recommended. Maintain a high-quality square 3000 × 3000 master.
Other services Requirements vary by distributor and downstream service. Follow the live upload form and keep the editable source file.

Preferred workflow: select and edit the best Midjourney image → finish artwork and typography → enlarge carefully if needed → inspect at 100% → convert/export in RGB → save the master and upload-specific JPG/PNG.

3000 × 3000 is a practical production target, not a universal minimum. DistroKid and Apple Music publish different minimums. Read DistroKid's current art rules and Apple Music artwork requirements before final upload. Use the full JR Album Cover Guide 2026 for wider distribution comparisons.

8. Rights, evidence and the final cover-art QA

Midjourney's published terms say that users own assets they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law, subject to third-party rights and specific exceptions. Companies above US$1 million in revenue have a Pro/Mega plan condition. Upscaling another user's creation does not transfer ownership to you. Public and Stealth workflows carry different visibility rules. Consult Midjourney commercial use and current terms.

Commercial permission does not equal copyright protection. The U.S. Copyright Office recognizes genuine human-authored expressive choices or creative modification where sufficiently original, but generally not purely AI-generated material or prompts alone. Protection is evaluated case by case. U.S. Copyright Office on AI output. This is educational guidance, not legal advice.

Eight checks before upload

  1. The artwork matches the real song or album's emotional identity.
  2. The main idea survives reduction to streaming thumbnail size.
  3. Names/titles, if present, exactly match approved release metadata.
  4. There are no unauthorized logos, photos, celebrity likenesses, characters or misleading endorsements.
  5. The original prompt, generation, human edits and final master have been saved.
  6. The commercial use terms, reference sources and third-party permissions were reviewed.
  7. The actual distributor's file size, shape, color and format checks pass.
  8. A human creator has approved the exact file intended for upload.
