PART 3 OF 6 · FIND YOUR SOUND

Reference Without Copying

Use references to sharpen your listening. Then remove the reference name and keep the musical information.

The translation method

[WHAT I HEAR] → [TRANSFERABLE CHARACTERISTIC] → [MY IMPLEMENTATION]

Study relationships: vocal behavior, instrumentation, groove, harmony, section contrast, hook behavior, transitions, spatial depth and production. Do not carry forward a distinctive melody, lyric, signature riff or voice identity.

Reusable reference worksheet

Editable reference worksheet — tap/click and type over the prompts

[REFERENCE PURPOSE] = what am I studying?
[WHAT I HEAR] = observable behavior, not a marketing adjective
[WHY IT WORKS] = the musical relationship creating the effect
[TRANSFERABLE CHARACTERISTIC] = the principle I can use
[MY IMPLEMENTATION] = how my project will express it differently
[PROMPT-READY WORDING] = concise description with the artist/song name removed

Edits stay in the page while it is open. Print / Save PDF before refreshing or leaving if you want to keep the worksheet.

ADVANCED PRODUCER PASS · DECONSTRUCTION GRID

Listen below the genre label

For an advanced reference pass, do not ask only “what genre is this?” Deconstruct the relationships that make the record behave the way it does.

Editable Producer Listening Grid

[TEMPO / METER / MICROTIMING] = ___
[HARMONIC MOTION / TENSION] = ___
[REGISTER / VOICING] = ___
[DRUM POCKET / TRANSIENT CHARACTER] = ___
[BASS–DRUM INTERLOCK] = ___
[INSTRUMENT ROLES] = ___
[ARRANGEMENT DENSITY BY SECTION] = ___
[SECTION ENERGY DELTA] = ___
[HOOK TYPE / PLACEMENT] = ___
[VOCAL REGISTER / PHRASING / PROXIMITY] = ___
[TRANSITION DEVICES] = ___
[LOW-END / WIDTH / DEPTH] = ___
[MIX AESTHETIC] = ___
[TRANSFERABLE PRINCIPLE] = ___
[MY DIFFERENT IMPLEMENTATION] = ___

You do not need every field for every song. Use the grid to find the two or three relationships that actually explain why the reference is useful.

Neutral example

Example — not your worksheet.

[WHAT I HEAR] quiet verse vocal stays close to the listener
[WHY IT WORKS] low arrangement density leaves vocal detail exposed
[TRANSFERABLE CHARACTERISTIC] restrained lower-intensity delivery early in the song; width and sustain reserved for the chorus
[MY IMPLEMENTATION] intimate alto over sparse piano, saving sustained notes and backing width for chorus
[PROMPT-READY WORDING] close restrained verse vocal; sparse accompaniment; chorus opens into fuller sustained phrasing and wider backing layers

Borja · Dante 9th

Borja can study melodic-rock references for section energy, guitar density, vocal urgency and hook behavior without making the commercial artist the final instruction.

[REFERENCE PURPOSE] learn how reflective rock verses expand into memorable choruses
[ARRANGEMENT DENSITY] cleaner guitar space and less vocal intensity in verse; more layered guitar density in chorus
[SECTION ENERGY DELTA] chorus gains width, harmonic support and performance urgency—not merely volume
[VOCAL] conversational lower-intensity verse → broader melody and controlled grit in hook
[DANTE9 IMPLEMENTATION] Spanish-language reflective verse, spacious guitars, grounded male vocal; chorus adds layered guitar weight and urgency while preserving emotional ambiguity
[PROMPT-READY WORDING] reflective melodic alternative rock; spacious clean verse guitars; grounded conversational male vocal; chorus expands with thicker guitar layers, broader melody and controlled vocal grit; emotionally direct, not triumphant

As Borja's own catalog develops, Mírame and other keeper songs should increasingly replace outside references as the evidence base.

The removal test

Delete every artist and song name from the working brief. If the brief still tells you what to create, what to listen for and what relationship must survive, the reference has done its job.
