The New Testament assumes a conflict with history behind it
By the time of Jesus, Judeans and Samaritans share Israelite scripture and ancestry claims while disagreeing sharply over sacred geography, community legitimacy and worship. John 4’s dispute over Mount Gerizim and Jerusalem does not appear from nowhere.
The old “foreign colonists only” story is too simple
Second Kings 17 describes Assyria bringing populations into the former northern kingdom after Samaria’s fall, and later Jewish polemic sometimes emphasized foreign origins. Samaritans themselves identify as descendants of ancient Israel. Modern historical and archaeological study treats Samaritan ethnogenesis as more complex than either pole alone.
Mount Gerizim becomes a rival sacred center
Archaeology has uncovered a major sanctuary complex on Mount Gerizim with Persian-period roots and extensive later development. Samaritan Torah tradition identifies Gerizim as the chosen sacred mountain. The Jerusalem/Gerizim conflict therefore becomes both textual and institutional.
John Hyrcanus later changes the relationship violently
The Samaritan temple on Gerizim was destroyed under the Hasmonean ruler John Hyrcanus in the late second century BCE. That destruction belongs to the Hellenistic/Hasmonean bridge we will build next.
Why this matters for Act III
The Good Samaritan and Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman gain force only if Samaritans are understood as a closely related but contested Israelite community—not as generic strangers. Act III should link back here rather than explain Samaritan history from scratch in every Gospel article.
