Saul to Paul: Damascus Road, Conversion or Call & What Paul Says About Himself

Saul to Paul: Damascus Road, Conversion or Call & What Paul Says About Himself

Paul is one of the most influential figures in Christian history, but his story is often simplified into a single sentence: Saul the Jewish persecutor became Paul the Christian apostle. The sources are more interesting than that.

Acts tells the story three times

Acts 9 narrates Saul’s encounter on the road to Damascus. Acts 22 and 26 retell the event in speeches. The accounts share a core—heavenly encounter, Jesus, mission and radical change—but differ in wording and details. Those differences should be compared rather than silently flattened.

Paul’s own earlier testimony

Galatians 1 is especially important because Paul’s letter predates Acts. Paul says he formerly persecuted the assembly of God, then describes God revealing his Son to him and calling him to proclaim among the Gentiles. His language echoes prophetic-call traditions.

Conversion or call?

Christians have long called the event Paul’s conversion. Many modern scholars emphasize that Paul did not think he had stopped worshipping Israel’s God and joined a completely separate modern-style religion. ‘Call’ therefore captures an important dimension. The safest approach is to explain both terms rather than pretend the debate is settled by one label.

Did Saul change his name to Paul?

Acts does not say Jesus renamed Saul. Acts 13:9 simply introduces ‘Saul, who was also called Paul.’ A Jewish person in the Roman world could use more than one name. The popular idea that the righteous Christian ‘Paul’ replaced the sinful Jewish ‘Saul’ is not what the text says.

The real transformation

Whatever label is used, the source tradition is clear that Paul moved from persecuting Jesus followers to becoming their most famous Gentile missionary. That transformation needs no invented name-change story to make it dramatic.
