Esau and Edom: What Genesis 36 Actually Says
Readers often leave Esau behind once Jacob receives the name Israel. Genesis does not. Chapter 36 gives Esau an extensive genealogy, lands, chiefs and kings and repeatedly states that Esau is Edom.
Esau is not erased
Genesis 36 traces wives, sons, descendants and political structures associated with Esau. The chapter functions as a genuine branch of the family story even though Genesis 37 will return to Jacob's household.
Seir and Edom
Esau settles in the hill country of Seir. The genealogy intertwines his descendants with the regional setting and identifies him as father of the Edomites.
Why later readers see more than a genealogy
Israel and Edom later become neighboring peoples with a difficult political history. Prophetic texts can therefore use Jacob/Israel and Esau/Edom as national symbols. That later history should be read as later history—not retrojected into every action of the twin brothers.
Later Jewish tradition
Rabbinic interpretation often extends Esau/Edom symbolically toward Rome and, in later settings, Christian imperial power. That is an important history of interpretation, not something Genesis 36 itself says.
A surprising biblical protection
Deuteronomy later calls the descendants of Esau Israel's kin and warns Israel not to seize their land because Seir has been given to Esau. Even the later national relationship is therefore more complicated than simple hatred.
