Uber Eats by Car, Bike, Scooter or Foot in the U.S.: Which Delivery Mode Fits?

Jack Righteous • U.S. Uber delivery guide • Updated October 21, 2026

You don't need the same vehicle for every Uber Eats delivery. Depending on the city, couriers can work by car, motorized scooter, bicycle or on foot. Each method has different minimum requirements and actual operating costs. This guide helps you choose a delivery mode—or consider Uber passenger driving instead.

Two Uber signup paths

Drive passengers or deliver orders?

Uber Driver — passenger rides

Carry riders with an eligible four-door vehicle and meet separate age, driving experience, licence, screening and insurance rules.

Uber Eats — deliver food

Choose an eligible car, scooter, bicycle or walking mode for your city and complete the matching delivery screening.

Referral disclosure: I may receive a referral benefit only if Uber recognizes the referral as eligible. Because I am based in Canada, a U.S. signup is not necessarily reward-eligible under Uber's Canadian program. Uber controls every local offer and required qualifying activity. No earnings or bonus are guaranteed.

1. U.S. Uber Eats delivery requirements by transport mode

Uber's national U.S. delivery page lists the following baseline requirements. Always select the actual transportation method you will use and verify whether Uber offers it in your city. A state or city can have additional requirements.

Delivery method Typical minimum age Core onboarding requirements
Car 19; 21 in California and New York State Valid driver's licence, 2- or 4-door car, Social Security number, background screening
Motorized scooter or motorbike 19; 21 in California and New York State Valid driver's licence, Social Security number and screening; local vehicle limits apply
Bicycle 18 Government-issued ID, Social Security number and background screening; must be offered locally
On foot 18 Government-issued ID, Social Security number and background screening; only in supported cities

The 21-year motor-vehicle exception in California and New York State is easy to miss. It affects delivery by car and motorized scooter, not the separate 18+ bike/walking baseline. Verify your specific application. Source: Uber U.S. delivery requirements.

2. Delivery by car: broader range, more operating costs

Car delivery

Age and basics: Usually 19+; 21+ in California and New York State; an eligible two- or four-door vehicle, a valid driver's licence and Uber's screening.

Where it fits: Suburban areas, bad-weather flexibility and orders that are harder to carry by bike or on foot.

Real trade-offs: Fuel or charging, insurance, parking, tolls, maintenance, depreciation, traffic and unpaid miles between requests.

A vehicle that qualifies for deliveries may not qualify for passenger rides. For example, rideshare uses different age and four-door-car standards.

For car couriers, the top question is net return per online hour after driving expenses, not whether an individual delivery's upfront amount looks large.

3. Scooter or motorbike: eligibility is not universal

Scooter or motorbike delivery

Age and basics: Uber generally lists 19+ (21+ for motor-vehicle delivery in California and New York State), a valid driver's licence and screening. Local rules determine which vehicles and licences qualify.

Where it fits: Road exposure, weather, protective equipment, local licensing, motor size/category rules, safe storage and whether Uber has approved your exact type.

Real trade-offs: undefined

Where Uber offers the mode, a small motorized vehicle may handle dense areas more easily than a car.

Older versions of Uber's guidance described a motorized scooter under 50cc for some signups. Uber's current national landing page groups motorbikes and scooters together. Do not assume every motorcycle or e-scooter qualifies; follow the options in your actual city-specific signup.

4. Bicycle: efficient short-distance deliveries in some cities

Bicycle delivery

Age and basics: 18+ with government-issued ID, Social Security number and a background check, where bicycle delivery is supported.

Where it fits: Weather, traffic safety, hills, delivery-bag capacity, lighting, battery/repair costs for e-bikes and limits on carrying larger orders.

Real trade-offs: undefined

Dense, bike-friendly restaurant clusters where parking a car would be a major burden.

Uber's Help page tells bike couriers to select the appropriate bicycle option when signing up. Use the transportation mode approved on your account rather than assuming you can freely switch between car and bike.

Delivery on foot

Age and basics: 18+ with government-issued ID, Social Security number and screening; walking is offered only in selected cities.

Where it fits: Carrying capacity, weather, personal safety, pace, stair access and the fact that many neighbourhoods are not suitable for walking deliveries.

Real trade-offs: undefined

Very compact urban areas where orders are small and drop-offs are close together.

Walking delivery is not available nationwide. Uber's bike/foot signup guide says you must select the correct option under how you want to earn. Check Uber's bicycle and walking onboarding instructions.

6. How to choose the most practical mode

The mode that has the lowest cost per mile does not automatically have the highest earnings per hour. Your real result depends on the trip offers Uber gives your account and how long each job takes.

  1. Check availability first: choose your intended city and transport method during signup.
  2. Map a realistic operating zone: compare restaurant density, distances, bike lanes, hills, parking and local safety.
  3. Track at least a few comparable shifts: total online hours, completed orders, upfront earnings, tips and unpaid repositioning.
  4. Calculate estimated operating profit: gross earnings minus direct expenses, divided by total hours online.
  5. Separate temporary incentives from repeatable earnings, and check any insurance or registration obligations.

An easy comparison

If a car shift has larger gross payouts but long waits, paid parking and many empty miles, a bicycle shift in a dense approved zone could perform better after expenses. In a spread-out suburb, the reverse might be true. Test both before making claims about which pays more.

Use our 25-Delivery Profit Test and the free U.S. Profit Starter Kit to compare your actual results.

7. Insurance and safety differ by method

Uber's current U.S. delivery insurance differs from its passenger-rideshare insurance. Motor-vehicle couriers need appropriate personal automobile insurance. Uber notes that its maintained coverage does not pay to repair your car during a delivery, and that it generally does not maintain coverage for bicycles, e-bikes or walking unless required by law.

Review Uber's official delivery insurance explanation and check your own insurer's terms for your vehicle and work. Do not rely on another driver's coverage screenshot or assume a personal policy covers commercial deliveries.

8. What if passenger driving pays better in your market?

Uber passenger driving is a separate opportunity with stricter onboarding. Uber currently lists a 23+ baseline for newly activating U.S. passenger drivers, at least one year of U.S. licensed driving experience (three years if under 25), and an eligible four-door vehicle. City regulations and screening rules still apply.

If you own a qualifying car and want to transport riders, compare the passenger signup with delivery rather than assuming a delivery car qualifies for rides. See the U.S. Uber Driver and Uber Eats hub for insurance, tax and licensing differences.

9. Before you sign up: a five-point checklist

  • City: verify Uber Eats availability where you intend to complete deliveries.
  • Mode: select car, scooter, bicycle or walking honestly; check the approved options shown to your account.
  • Eligibility: confirm the minimum age, ID/licence, Social Security number and required screening.
  • Costs: check personal insurance, safe equipment, repairs and how you will track online time and expenses.
  • Offers: read the current terms Uber displays. A code appearing in a U.S. signup flow does not establish that a Canadian referrer qualifies for a reward.
