Who was Melchizedek? Separate what Genesis 14 actually says from Psalm 110, Hebrews 7 and later claims that he was an angel, Shem or Jesus.

Who Was Melchizedek?
Melchizedek appears briefly in Genesis 14 and then becomes enormously important in later interpretation. The safest way to understand him is to begin with how little Genesis actually says—and then follow what Psalm 110 and Hebrews do with that silence.
What Genesis 14 actually says
After Abram rescues Lot and defeats the coalition that captured him, Melchizedek king of Salem comes out with bread and wine. He is also identified as priest of God Most High. He blesses Abram and blesses God Most High, whom he calls maker or possessor of heaven and earth. Abram gives him a tenth of everything.
That is the textual baseline: king, priest, Salem, blessing, bread and wine, and a tithe. Genesis provides no genealogy for him, no birth story and no death story.
Does Genesis say Melchizedek was Jesus?
No. Genesis never identifies Melchizedek as Jesus, an angel or a supernatural being. Those are later interpretations. Some Jewish traditions associated him with Shem. Some Christian interpreters have proposed a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ. These claims belong to tradition or interpretation, not the wording of Genesis 14.
Psalm 110 changes his significance
Psalm 110 speaks of a figure who is “a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” That line turns the brief Genesis priest-king into a model that can be reused in later royal and priestly theology.
Hebrews 7 builds a Christian argument
The New Testament letter to the Hebrews develops Melchizedek at length to explain Jesus' priesthood. Hebrews pays close attention to the absence of genealogy and death information in the Genesis account and uses Melchizedek as a literary-theological pattern for a priesthood not based on Levi.
Why does he matter inside Abraham's story?
Melchizedek appears before the formal covenant scenes of Genesis 15 and 17. He recognizes and blesses Abram in the name of God Most High. His presence also reminds readers that the Genesis world is not presented as though Abram is the only person who knows or serves the Most High God.
