Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife: Power, Refusal & False Accusation
Joseph rises inside Potiphar's household, but he does not stop being enslaved. That power imbalance matters when the master's wife repeatedly demands sex from him.
Joseph succeeds in the household
Potiphar places Joseph over his household because everything entrusted to him prospers. Genesis simultaneously describes Joseph as successful and as property purchased in Egypt. Status inside slavery is still slavery.
The pressure is repeated
Potiphar's wife tells Joseph to sleep with her. He refuses and points to both his master's trust and his responsibility before God. The text says she speaks to him day after day.
The garment becomes evidence again
When she grabs Joseph's garment, he leaves it and flees. She then uses the garment to accuse him before the household and Potiphar. Genesis does not give her a personal name.
Joseph is imprisoned
Potiphar becomes angry and Joseph is sent to the place where the king's prisoners are confined. The narrative does not say that Joseph is vindicated in the household before this happens. His refusal is followed by punishment, not immediate reward.
Why this episode matters beyond sexual morality
The story is about chastity, but it is also about power, credibility and vulnerability. Joseph has less social power than the person accusing him. His integrity does not protect him from a false narrative backed by higher status.
