Why Didn’t Sennacherib Capture Jerusalem? Bible, Assyrian Records & Historical Theories

What this guide will help you do

Jerusalem survives Sennacherib’s 701 BCE campaign. Compare the Bible’s divine-deliverance account, Assyria’s silence on a capture and the limits of historical reconstruction.

The basic historical fact is easier than the explanation

Sennacherib devastated Judah in 701 BCE. Lachish fell. Hezekiah paid tribute. Jerusalem was pressured. Yet Jerusalem was not recorded by Sennacherib as a captured capital, and Hezekiah remained on the throne. The sources converge on survival while explaining its meaning very differently.

The biblical explanation

Second Kings 19 and Isaiah 37 say YHWH defended Jerusalem. The narrative reports that an angel of YHWH struck 185,000 in the Assyrian camp, after which Sennacherib returned to Nineveh. Within the biblical story, Jerusalem’s survival is not military luck. It is divine judgment against imperial arrogance and an answer to prayer.

The Assyrian explanation—or lack of one

Sennacherib’s royal inscriptions boast of conquered Judean towns, captives, territorial losses and tribute. They portray Hezekiah as confined in Jerusalem but stop short of claiming the city was taken. Imperial propaganda rarely highlights failure, so the omission cannot by itself tell us exactly why the campaign ended as it did.

Historical proposals remain proposals

Modern explanations have included disease, logistical limits, shifting strategic priorities, tribute, political settlement and the possibility that the Assyrians considered the campaign successful without needing to storm Jerusalem. Some interpreters connect the biblical mass-death tradition with epidemic disease. None of these reconstructions can be demonstrated as the one established mechanism.

Avoid the false choice

Readers do not have to pretend historians can prove an angelic intervention, and they do not have to pretend Jerusalem’s survival is historically meaningless. The evidence supports a real imperial crisis and a city that did not become one of Sennacherib’s claimed conquests. Theology interprets that survival. History reconstructs circumstances. Responsible authority content keeps those tasks distinct.
