The Maccabean Revolt & Hanukkah: What 1 and 2 Maccabees Actually Say

Resistance begins outside Jerusalem

First Maccabees portrays Mattathias and his sons resisting Seleucid religious coercion. Judah, nicknamed Maccabee, becomes the revolt’s most famous military leader. The conflict combines guerrilla warfare, religious resistance, internal Jewish conflict and changing imperial politics.

The Temple is rededicated

After rebel victories, the sanctuary is purified and rededicated. First and Second Maccabees connect the celebration to an eight-day festival commemorating restoration of worship. This becomes the historical core of Hanukkah.

What about the oil miracle?

The famous story that one day’s supply of oil burned for eight days appears in later rabbinic tradition, not in 1 or 2 Maccabees. That later tradition is central to Jewish Hanukkah memory but should not be retrojected into the earliest surviving accounts.

Different Christian canons treat Maccabees differently

First and Second Maccabees are part of Catholic and Orthodox biblical traditions but are not included in the Jewish Tanakh or most Protestant Old Testaments. They remain indispensable historical sources for the period regardless of canon status.

Hanukkah also appears in John 10 as the Feast of Dedication, making this revolt part of the direct historical background of Jesus’ world.
