John Hyrcanus, Samaritans & Idumeans: Expansion and Forced Identity Under the Hasmoneans

What this guide will help you do

John Hyrcanus expanded Hasmonean rule, destroyed the Samaritan sanctuary on Mount Gerizim and incorporated Idumea under coercive religious policies.

Hasmonean independence becomes territorial expansion

John Hyrcanus I rules in the late second century BCE and expands Hasmonean control beyond Judea. Ancient sources associate him with campaigns against Samaria and Idumea.

Mount Gerizim is destroyed

The Samaritan sanctuary on Mount Gerizim, whose Persian-period roots are archaeologically significant, was destroyed under Hasmonean rule in the late second century BCE. This deepens the institutional rupture between Jerusalem-centered Judeans and Samaritans before the Gospel era.

Idumean incorporation carries its own ethical problem

Josephus reports that Idumeans were required to adopt Jewish customs, including circumcision, if they wished to remain in the land. Historians debate the exact character and scale of this policy, but coercive integration belongs in the discussion.

Herod’s family later emerges from Idumea

That connection makes Hasmonean expansion directly relevant to Act III. Herod the Great’s Idumean ancestry will later become one element in the politics of legitimacy surrounding his Roman-backed kingship.

The larger lesson is uncomfortable and important: a community that remembers persecution can still use coercive power when political circumstances reverse.
