Ibrahim in Islam: Abraham, Ishmael, the Kaaba & the Sacrifice

Ibrahim is one of the Qur'an's major prophetic figures. Islamic tradition sees him as an ancestor, model of pure worship and central figure in the sacred history connected to the Kaaba. But careful comparison requires separating what the Qur'an explicitly says from details supplied by later Islamic tradition.

Abraham before later religious labels

Qur'an 3:67 says Ibrahim was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but an upright submitter to God and not among the polytheists. The point is theological: Abraham represents devotion to the one God before later communal labels.

Ibrahim and Ishmael raise the foundations of the House

Qur'an 2:127 explicitly places Ibrahim and Ishmael together raising the foundations of the House and praying that God accept their work. The surrounding verses connect Abraham with the House as a place of worship and prayer. This is a major difference from Genesis, which does not contain a Kaaba-building episode.

Abraham's descendants near the Sacred House

In Qur'an 14:37, Ibrahim prays concerning descendants he has settled in an uncultivated valley near God's Sacred House, asking that hearts incline toward them and that they receive provision. Islamic tradition connects this with Hagar, Ishmael and Mecca, but the verse itself should be quoted and interpreted carefully rather than loaded with every later narrative detail.

Which son is sacrificed in the Qur'an?

Surah 37 narrates a father telling his son that he has seen in a dream that he must sacrifice him. The son responds with submission; the test is fulfilled and a great sacrifice substitutes for him. The crucial verses do not name the son.

Text versus tradition: Genesis 22 explicitly names Isaac. The Qur'anic sacrifice passage does not explicitly identify the son there. Later Islamic tradition came to widely identify the son as Ishmael. Saying “the Qur'an says Ishmael” is therefore less precise than saying “later Islamic tradition commonly identifies Ishmael.”

Ibrahim as a model of submission

Across the Qur'an, Abraham challenges idolatry, argues for devotion to God, prays for descendants and is presented as exemplary in faith. Islamic memory therefore does not merely borrow the biblical patriarch; it places Ibrahim inside a distinct Qur'anic theology of prophecy, worship and submission.

Why the distinction matters

Judaism, Christianity and Islam can all honour Abraham while telling genuinely different theological stories around him. Respectful comparison does not require erasing those differences. It requires identifying the source level of each claim.
