Daniel 8, 9 & 11: Antiochus IV, the 70 Weeks & Prophecy in Its Historical Crisis

Daniel’s visions move toward a specific persecution

Daniel 8 identifies a ram with Media-Persia and a goat with Greece, then describes a later horn that attacks the sanctuary. Daniel 11 offers an unusually detailed sequence of Hellenistic conflicts culminating in a ruler who profanes the sanctuary and suppresses worship.

Antiochus IV is the central historical referent in critical scholarship

Many scholars identify the persecuting ruler in these passages with Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The fit includes Seleucid politics, conflict over the Temple and suppression of Jewish practice in the second century BCE.

Daniel 9 rereads Jeremiah’s seventy years

The seventy weeks vision transforms Jeremiah’s exile horizon into a larger symbolic chronology involving Jerusalem, an anointed figure, covenant conflict and desolation. Jewish and Christian interpreters have constructed multiple timelines from the passage.

Christian traditions often connect Daniel 9 to Jesus and may interpret parts of Daniel 8–12 as patterns extending toward a final Antichrist.
