From Alexander to Rome: The Hellenistic & Hasmonean World Before Jesus
Follow Judea from Alexander the Great through Ptolemaic and Seleucid rule, Antiochus IV, the Maccabean revolt, Hasmonean independence and Pompey’s Roman conquest.
Persia gives way to the Greek world
Alexander the Great conquers the Persian Empire in the late fourth century BCE, and Judea enters the Hellenistic world. After Alexander’s death, his empire fragments. Judea passes between Ptolemaic and Seleucid control while Greek language, institutions and culture become deeply embedded across the eastern Mediterranean.
Hellenization is not simply “Jews versus Greeks”
Jewish communities themselves respond differently to Greek culture. Greek becomes a Jewish language as well as an imperial one; the Septuagint emerges from this wider world. Some elites embrace Hellenistic institutions more aggressively, while others resist practices they see as incompatible with Torah. The conflict that explodes under Antiochus IV therefore also involves disputes within Jewish society.
Antiochus IV turns cultural conflict into persecution
In the 160s BCE the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes intervenes in Judean political and priestly struggles, suppresses distinctive Jewish practices and profanes the Jerusalem Temple. The resulting revolt led by the family of Mattathias and Judah Maccabee becomes both a religious resistance movement and, over time, a war for political autonomy.
Revolt produces a new Jewish dynasty
The Temple is rededicated, remembered in Hanukkah. The Hasmonean family then moves from revolt leadership into high priesthood, territorial expansion and eventually kingship. A movement born resisting imperial control becomes a ruling state capable of coercion and internal conflict of its own.
Rome enters through a Jewish civil war
By 63 BCE rival Hasmonean claimants invite or face Roman intervention. Pompey captures Jerusalem and enters the Temple precinct. Judea does not immediately become a standard Roman province, but Roman supremacy is now decisive. The political world that eventually produces Herod the Great has arrived.
Authority rule: this period is essential for understanding Daniel, Hanukkah, Pharisees, Sadducees, sectarian Judaism, Roman Judea and Jesus. It is not optional background.
