Cornelius & Gentile Inclusion: Acts 10–11, Peter’s Vision & What Became Clean

Acts 10 is one of the most important boundary-crossing stories in the New Testament. A Roman centurion named Cornelius receives a vision. Peter receives another. Their meeting forces the Jerusalem movement to confront a question that will shape Christianity: can Gentiles be included as Gentiles?

The sheet and the animals

Peter sees animals and hears a command to kill and eat. He objects that he has never eaten anything profane or unclean. The voice tells him not to call profane what God has cleansed.

Peter explains the vision

The safest interpretation begins with Peter’s own explanation. When he enters Cornelius’s house, Acts has him say that God has shown him not to call any person profane or unclean. Food imagery carries the vision, but the immediate narrative issue is fellowship with Gentiles.

The Spirit arrives before the argument is finished

While Peter is speaking, Acts says the Holy Spirit falls on the Gentile listeners. Jewish believers with Peter are astonished. Peter then asks how water baptism can be withheld from people who have received the Spirit.

Does Acts 10 abolish all food laws?

Christians disagree about the broader dietary implications. What should not be missed is the explicit narrative conclusion: Peter learns not to treat Gentile people as religiously untouchable. Reducing Acts 10 to a menu argument can obscure the human boundary the story is actually breaking.

The controversy continues

Acts 11 shows Peter defending his actions in Jerusalem. Gentile inclusion is not presented as obvious to everyone from the beginning. The movement has to interpret what it believes God has done.
