Voice choice usually matters more than endlessly adjusting settings. Model choice comes next. Settings are refinement, not a substitute for the right voice.
Start with the job
- Expressive character/dialogue: test the current expressive model family.
- Stable long-form narration: test the current stable multilingual/long-form option.
- Fast or interactive delivery: test the current low-latency family.
- Multilingual content: use a voice and model that actually support the intended language and accent.
Current model names and limits change. Treat the model picker as a dated production decision, not permanent doctrine.
Controlled comparison
- Freeze a short representative script.
- Choose one voice.
- Generate with two plausible models.
- Score pronunciation, emotional fit, stability, pacing and repair cost.
- Only then test voice settings or tags.
Voice Design and Remixing
Use Voice Design when the library does not contain the voice concept you need. Describe age range, accent, pacing, tone, emotion and speaking style, then judge the previews on your real project text. Voice Remixing can modify eligible voices without overwriting the original; use it as a controlled variation tool, not as permission to imitate a person you do not have rights to use.
Audio tags and expression
Current expressive models can respond to performance tags such as laughs, whispers and delivery cues. Use them sparingly and listen for drift. If a human performance is easier to direct than text tags, switch to Voice Changer instead of fighting TTS.
