RAFT Prompt Framework

RAFT is a simple way to give ChatGPT a clearer brief. It is useful because it forces you to make four decisions before expecting a useful answer.

What you will do on this page

Take one real prompt and improve it with RAFT, then add the context and checks that RAFT alone cannot supply.

R — Role

Choose the perspective that would be useful for the job. A role can shape vocabulary, priorities and point of view.

Important: assigning a role does not magically provide missing expertise, proprietary knowledge, current facts or professional accountability.

A — Action

State the job. What should ChatGPT actually do: compare, diagnose, outline, rewrite, research, plan, evaluate or create?

F — Format

Describe the form you need back: a short recommendation, table, checklist, draft, questions first, step-by-step instructions or another useful structure.

T — Tone

Describe how the communication should sound when tone matters: plain-language, professional, conversational, technical, encouraging, concise or another appropriate style.

A simple RAFT example

Role: Act as an experienced editor for self-published authors.

Action: Review this book description and identify where the promise is unclear.

Format: Give me the three biggest issues first, then suggest a revised version.

Tone: Clear, direct and suitable for a general adult reader.

Where RAFT stops

RAFT helps structure a request, but professional work often requires more:

  • Context: What situation, audience or project are we dealing with?
  • Sources: What evidence or material should ChatGPT rely on?
  • Constraints: What must be preserved, avoided or verified?
  • Acceptance test: What would make the result usable?

Better instruction: “If important information is missing, ask me before you proceed. Do not invent missing facts or requirements.”

Refinement workflow

Use RAFT to get the first clear brief, then work through:

Brief → Questions → First result → Compare → Diagnose → Revise → Quality check.

Prompting is the beginning of the workflow, not the quality-control system.

Completion task

  1. Choose one real prompt you would normally send to ChatGPT.
  2. Rewrite it using Role, Action, Format and Tone.
  3. Add the context and source material ChatGPT actually needs.
  4. Add at least one constraint and one acceptance test.
  5. Tell ChatGPT to ask if something important is missing.
  6. Compare the result with what your original prompt would have produced.

Success means: the revised prompt makes the job clearer and gives you a better way to evaluate the answer—not merely a longer prompt.
