The Jerusalem Church: Peter, John, James, Temple, Torah & Shared Life

The first chapters of Acts do not show Christianity instantly detached from Judaism. They show Jesus’ followers praying, teaching, breaking bread, sharing resources and continuing to appear in the Temple.

A Jewish Jesus movement

Peter and John remain central public figures. Acts describes believers gathering in Jerusalem and interacting with Temple authorities. Later, James the brother of Jesus emerges as a leading Jerusalem figure.

Shared possessions

Acts 2 and 4 describe believers selling property and distributing resources according to need. This has inspired Christian communal movements for centuries. It is careless, however, to claim that Acts simply endorses or condemns a modern economic system. The text describes a voluntary community practice tied to fellowship, generosity and need.

Ananias and Sapphira

Acts 5 portrays a severe judgment after a couple misrepresents the proceeds of a property sale. Peter’s words indicate that the property and money were theirs to control; the narrative’s stated issue is deception, not failure to surrender every private asset.

Authority changes over time

Peter dominates the opening chapters, but James becomes especially important in Acts 15 and Paul’s letters. The Jerusalem movement therefore cannot be reduced to a single permanent leader or later denominational structure.

Why the Jerusalem church matters

It prevents a major historical mistake: imagining that Jesus died and a completely non-Jewish religion immediately replaced Judaism. The separation was much slower, more contested and regionally uneven.
