How to Make Cannabis Tea That Gets You High

Discover how to unlock the full potential of your cannabis leaves and stems with this beginner-friendly cannabis tea recipe.

Ingredients and Supplies

  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup of cannabis leaves and stems
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, coconut milk, or 1/2 tablespoon of butter or coconut oil
  • Optional: tea bag of your choice, sweeteners like honey or sugar

Step 1: Prepare the Cannabis (Decarboxylation)

  1. Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C).
  2. Break the cannabis into small pieces. Avoid grinding too fine.
  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  4. Spread the cannabis evenly on the sheet. Optionally, cover with another layer of foil to reduce aroma.
  5. Bake for 30–40 minutes, stirring halfway through.
  6. Let it cool completely and store in an airtight container if not using immediately.

Step 2: Make the Tea

  1. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in a medium pot.
  2. Add the fat source (milk, butter, or coconut oil) to the boiling water.
  3. Add the decarboxylated cannabis. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a teapot or cup.
  5. Add a tea bag for flavor if desired and sweeten with honey or sugar.

Step 3: Understanding the Effects

Onset: Cannabis tea effects may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to appear.

Duration: The effects usually last 4 to 8 hours. Factors like metabolism, tolerance, and dose impact this timeframe.

Always start with a small serving to gauge potency and avoid overconsumption.

Beginner Tips

  • Ensure proper ventilation during decarboxylation to manage the aroma.
  • Store decarboxylated cannabis in an airtight container to maintain potency.
  • Check the legal status of cannabis use in your area before making the tea.
