Uber Eats Grocery Delivery on Thanksgiving Weekend: Shop & Deliver Explained
Thanksgiving grocery demand can look attractive, but shopping orders are a different workflow from restaurant delivery and need their own profitability test.
What Shop & Deliver is
Uber's current Canadian Shop & Deliver program lets eligible delivery people opt in to shop for customer items in-store and then deliver them. Uber says these requests are labelled in the Driver app so you can distinguish them from ordinary delivery requests.
How payment works
Uber says eligible shoppers can use the Plus Card where available, or use a personal payment method and seek reimbursement through the Driver app. The Plus Card is optional and is authorized only for the expected approved order total.
Why Thanksgiving changes the calculation
Last-minute ingredients, desserts, drinks and convenience items can create a logical Thanksgiving use case. But larger baskets, substitutions, checkout lines and busy parking lots can make the order take much longer than a restaurant pickup.
What I would measure
- shopping time inside the store;
- number of substitutions;
- checkout time;
- distance to the customer;
- total trip payout and tips;
- total time from acceptance to drop-off.
