The Voice-Safe Editing Pass: Improve the Draft Without Flattening It

AI Writing Assistance · Find Your Voice · Public Lesson 8

This public lesson gives you something useful to do now, then points you to the deeper Find Your Voice practice if it is included in your access.

Editing with AI becomes dangerous when every sentence is optimized toward the same smooth, generic voice. Clean is useful. Uniform is not.

The Jack Righteous approach

Improve clarity in layers while protecting the phrases, rhythms and judgments that belong to you.

Use this workflow

  1. First edit only for factual, logical or meaning problems.
  2. Second, remove repetition and unnecessary detours.
  3. Third, improve readability without changing tone.
  4. Compare the revised version against the original for lost personality.
  5. Restore useful irregularities that carry attitude, humour, emphasis or emotional truth.

Why this matters

AI is very good at producing language that looks finished. That makes it easy to skip the human decision that should have happened first. This step slows the process down just enough to keep the meaning, reader and purpose visible before the writing gets more polished.

A prompt you can actually use

Copy and adapt:

Edit this draft conservatively. Protect my meaning, distinctive phrases, examples and level of directness. Flag changes that materially alter tone, emphasis or certainty instead of silently normalizing everything.

What a useful AI response should do

A useful response should make the decision easier to inspect. It should surface options, gaps, contradictions or patterns without quietly converting them into a final answer. You should still be able to see where your judgment enters the process.

Your five-minute exercise

One phrase that must survive is: ______________________________

One section that is too repetitive is: ______________________________

One place where the AI made me sound too generic is: ______________________________

One change I approve because it improves clarity is: ______________________________

What the human still decides

AI can help you organize, compare, question and revise. It cannot decide what you truly mean, what deserves emphasis, what is accurate enough to publish, or which version you are willing to stand behind. Keep those decisions with you.
