A practical V9→V10 lesson for turning inspiration into an original direction, then handing the approved Inspiration Extraction Brief into a Find Your Voice GPT workflow.

How to turn inspiration into original creative direction
The first mistake in AI-assisted creation is often asking the tool to reproduce the thing that inspired you. The better move is to extract the creative mechanism that caused your reaction, then rebuild from your own Flame, Voice and Brand.
The Bee Inspired rule
Borrow the principle. Do not borrow the identity.
A reference can teach you pacing, contrast, emotional clarity, framing, relationship dynamics, visual hierarchy, tension, rhythm or another craft principle. It should not decide your characters, story world, brand identity or message for you.
Step 1 · Record the reaction before you prompt
Before opening an image, music, writing or video generator, write down what actually stopped you. Use plain language. Do not describe the reference by brand, artist or franchise. Describe the effect.
What did I feel? What happened first? What relationship, contrast, sound, phrase or image was immediately readable? What made me want to stay with it?
Step 2 · Separate surface from mechanism
Make two columns. In the first, list surface details: specific colors, character type, costume, recognizable design language, exact wording, melody, location, signature props or symbols. In the second, list the mechanism: affection, discovery, transformation, tension, restraint, reveal, repetition, surprise, rhythm, contrast or another craft principle.
The second column is where your useful inspiration lives.
Step 3 · Run the Flame test
Finish this sentence several times:
“What I really care about here is…”
Do not stop at the first answer. Push until the statement could support a project of your own.
The Match example
The surface inspiration was warm character animation built around connection. But the useful creative principle was not “cute animated characters.” What mattered was the instant readability of two characters recognizing something in each other.
That moved into the Flame: the moment creative work stops feeling like output and starts feeling alive.
Step 4 · Write an Inspiration Extraction Brief
Your brief should contain five things:
- The reaction: what stopped you.
- The mechanism: why it worked.
- The Flame: why that mechanism matters to you.
- The rejection list: what belongs to the source but not to your project.
- The new direction: one sentence describing what you want to build instead.
Reaction: a simple emotional connection between two characters was readable almost instantly.
Mechanism: discovery → recognition → gentle connection → transformation.
Flame: creators generate many things, but the breakthrough is finding the thing that feels alive.
Reject: borrowed character design, borrowed setting, borrowed costumes, borrowed symbols, borrowed wording and borrowed story world.
New direction: create two original bee characters inside the Jack Righteous world whose relationship can carry that emotional idea repeatedly.
Step 5 · Inspiration is not yet your Voice
The Extraction Brief is source material for the next decision layer. Finding your Voice begins when you decide what the project means when it comes from you.
What should this make people feel?
What should they understand or remember?
Why does this matter to me?
What makes this recognizably mine?
What part of the inspiration source must not survive into my project?
Step 6 · Hand the approved brief to your GPT
Now AI has a defined job. It is not being asked to invent why the work exists. It is being asked to preserve your approved direction while helping you move into Voice.
Use this Inspiration Extraction Brief as source material. Preserve the approved creative mechanism and Flame. Do not reproduce the identity, characters, world, visual signatures, exact symbols, wording or distinctive surface elements of the inspiration source. Do not invent missing creator identity decisions. If an important decision is missing, mark it [CREATOR DECISION REQUIRED]. Help me move from inspiration into my own Voice without changing the approved direction.
This works for writing, music, video, design, branding, storytelling, visual concepts and marketing ideas. The production tool may change; the decision discipline does not.
Step 7 · Creator decision gate
Do not generate the finished asset yet. Approve the direction first.
ONE PROJECT → ONE JOB → ONE DECISION LAYER → APPROVE → THEN BUILD.
At this point the question is: Is this direction recognizably mine, and do I know what I want it to mean? If not, go back to the Flame before adding more prompts.
V9 → V10 BUILD-IN-PUBLIC PRACTICE
Notice → extract → approve → document → build. Bee Inspired is the first observable layer of the V9→V10 system: the audience can see what sparked the work, what was deliberately rejected, and what creator decision survived into the next stage.
Your output
Finish with a one-page Inspiration Extraction Brief. That becomes the input for character development, setting, messaging and the rest of the Dry Run.
