When Was Daniel Written? Babylonian Setting, Antiochus IV & the Dating Debate

The story world and the composition question are not identical

Daniel presents a Jewish exile named Daniel serving under Babylonian and Persian rulers. The court tales remember Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, royal pressure and life inside foreign empire. But asking when the stories are set is different from asking when the Book of Daniel reached the form we now have.

Why many scholars date the final form later

A broad stream of critical scholarship dates Daniel’s final composition or major apocalyptic layer to the second century BCE, particularly the persecution under Antiochus IV Epiphanes around 167–164 BCE. The detailed sequence of kingdoms and events in Daniel 11 becomes a major part of that argument, with interpreters seeing especially close correspondence through Antiochus’s career followed by expectations that do not map as cleanly onto what happened next.

Traditional readings disagree

Jewish and Christian traditional approaches may defend an earlier sixth-century authorship and understand the detailed visions as genuine predictive prophecy. Other scholars distinguish older court tales from later apocalyptic visions. These positions should be stated openly rather than hiding the dating debate from readers.

Why this matters for end-times interpretation

If Daniel’s apocalyptic visions addressed communities suffering under Hellenistic persecution, that original crisis becomes essential to interpreting beasts, horns and desecration imagery. A futurist Christian may still believe the imagery has further fulfillment, but the later application cannot responsibly erase Antiochus and the second-century context from the conversation.
