Keep Characters Consistent Across a Long Manuscript With AI

AI Writing Assistance · Project Knowledge & Story Control · Public Lesson 37
This block is about building enough project knowledge that AI can assist without quietly becoming the source of truth.
Character drift is easy to miss when a manuscript grows across dozens of scenes and revision sessions.
The Jack Righteous approach
Use AI to compare behavior against an approved character record instead of asking whether a scene simply 'feels right.'
Use this workflow
- Maintain a current character record.
- Check new scenes against established goals and relationships.
- Flag changes in speech, knowledge, motivation or behavior.
- Decide whether each difference is growth, contradiction or error.
- Update canon only when the change is intentional.
Why this matters
Long projects do not usually fail because the AI cannot write a sentence. They drift because facts, terminology, chronology, character logic or project rules change without anyone noticing. A stronger source-of-truth system keeps the human creator in control of what the project actually is.
A prompt you can actually use
Copy and adapt:
Compare this scene with the approved character record. Flag any mismatch in knowledge, motivation, relationships, speech, timeline or established history. Do not fix the scene until I decide whether each mismatch is intentional.
What a useful AI response should do
A useful response should distinguish known information from interpretation and proposals. It should surface contradictions instead of smoothing them away, preserve open questions and make it clear when a human decision is required.
Your five-minute exercise
A behavior that fits the character is: ______________________________
A possible contradiction is: ______________________________
A change that may represent growth is: ______________________________
A canon record that needs updating is: ______________________________
What the human still decides
AI can organize records, compare scenes, surface contradictions and help maintain consistency. You still decide what becomes canon, which interpretation is fair, what can be published, and when a real-person or source-material issue needs additional professional review.
