Why was Stephen killed in Acts 7? Follow the dispute, his long speech about Israel’s history, accusations concerning Temple and Torah, his death and Saul’s role—without turning the story into anti-Jewish theology.
Stephen in Acts 6–7: Temple, Torah, Martyrdom & Saul
Stephen enters Acts as one of seven men appointed amid a dispute over the daily distribution to widows. He quickly becomes a public witness whose preaching leads to accusation, trial-like confrontation and death.
The accusations
Acts says opponents accuse Stephen of speaking against Moses, God, the Temple and the law. His response is not a short denial. Acts 7 retells Israel’s story from Abraham through Moses, wilderness rebellion and the Temple.
What the speech does
Stephen’s argument presents a recurring pattern of resistance to God’s messengers and warns against treating a sacred building as if God could be contained by it. That criticism belongs inside a Jewish scriptural debate; it should not be turned into a claim that Jews as a people rejected God.
First Christian martyr?
Christian tradition commonly calls Stephen the first Christian martyr. Acts presents him as the first follower of Jesus whose death it narrates after the movement begins its public mission. ‘Martyr’ later becomes a technical Christian category from the Greek word for witness.
Saul is there
Acts says witnesses lay their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul and then describes Saul approving the killing and participating in persecution. This becomes the narrative setup for the Damascus-road story.
Historical restraint
Acts is our source for Stephen’s speech and death; we do not possess an independent transcript. Responsible reading therefore distinguishes Luke’s theological presentation from independently verifiable detail.
