What this guide will help you do

Acts 8 pushes the Jesus movement beyond Jerusalem through Philip’s work in Samaria and his encounter with an Ethiopian eunuch. Learn why this Philip should not automatically be confused with Philip the Apostle.

Philip, Samaritans & the Ethiopian Eunuch: Acts 8 and Expanding Boundaries

After Stephen’s death, Acts depicts persecution scattering believers from Jerusalem. Philip becomes one of the key figures in the next geographic expansion.

Which Philip?

Acts 6 names Philip among the Seven. Later Acts 21 calls him ‘Philip the evangelist, one of the seven.’ That makes him distinct in the narrative from Philip the Apostle among the Twelve. Christian retellings often blur the two.

Samaria

Philip proclaims the message in Samaria, where Acts describes healings, exorcisms and many baptisms. Peter and John then arrive, pray for the new believers and confront Simon, a local wonder-worker who attempts to purchase spiritual authority.

The Ethiopian eunuch

Philip next encounters a high official serving the Kandake, or queen, of the Ethiopians. The man is reading Isaiah. Philip interprets the passage through Jesus, and the official asks to be baptized.

What Acts is doing

The story combines geography with boundary crossing: Jerusalem moves toward Samaria and then toward an African court official whose status also raises questions of inclusion. It is dangerous to flatten the scene into a modern racial slogan, but equally wrong to erase the African dimension.

The larger road

Acts 8 prepares readers for the even larger Gentile-inclusion dispute still ahead. The movement is expanding faster than its existing categories.
