Jesus’ Ascension & the Great Commission: How the Gospels and Acts End Differently

The familiar Christian sequence—resurrection appearances, Great Commission, ascension, Pentecost—is assembled from more than one New Testament work.

Matthew

Matthew closes in Galilee with the risen Jesus commissioning disciples to make disciples among the nations, baptize and teach. Matthew does not narrate an ascension scene.

Luke and Acts

Luke ends with Jesus blessing the disciples and being taken from them; Acts opens with a fuller ascension scene and then looks ahead to the Spirit’s arrival at Pentecost. Because Luke and Acts are companion works, their narratives should be read together while still noticing their literary differences.

John

John closes with resurrection appearances, Peter’s restoration and a final reflection on the beloved disciple. It does not give the same Mount-of-Olives ascension narrative found in Acts.

Mark’s ending

The earliest surviving manuscripts of Mark end at 16:8. The familiar longer ending contains appearances, mission language and ascension, but is widely recognized as a later textual ending. That does not erase its history in Christian Bibles; it does mean the textual history should be disclosed.

The transition

Act III does not end with Jesus disappearing from the story. The narrative moves into the formation of the Jesus movement, the mission of the apostles and eventually the texts that become the New Testament.
