One Idea Sprint Day 1: Name the Idea Clearly
Gary WhittakerOne Idea Sprint Day 1: Name the Idea Clearly
Define one idea, one person, one possible value, one uncertainty and one boundary before you build.
Today’s practical job
Turn a vague interest or AI output into one specific idea worth examining. You need your Sprint Commitment and one idea or output to work from.
Identify
Name what exists now: a draft, output, note, concept, question or rough asset.
Define
Name who it may serve and what it may help them feel, understand or do.
Limit
State the uncertainty and what you will not build during this Sprint.
Six steps for Day 1
- Name what exists now. Do not describe the whole imagined future.
- Name the idea behind it. Ask what the output might become useful for.
- Name the intended person. Avoid “everyone.”
- Name the intended value. What might change for that person?
- Name the uncertainty. What do you still need to learn?
- Set the boundary. What larger work is excluded?
Worked example
What exists: a rough AI-assisted outline for a project-organizing guide.
Intended person: a first-time AI music creator with several song versions and no clear record system.
Intended value: help the creator keep prompts, versions and contribution notes together.
Main uncertainty: can a beginner follow the structure without extra explanation?
Boundary: do not build a complete course or paid product during the Sprint.
Create the Sprint Flame Statement
Record 2: Sprint Flame Statement
I am testing [specific idea] for [specific person] because it may help them [specific value]. The main uncertainty is [question]. During this Sprint, I will not build [larger excluded work].
Common mistakes
Several projects in one sentence
Choose one idea and park the rest.
A vague audience
Define the first person who would use or experience the result.
A hidden launch plan
The Sprint tests an uncertainty. It does not require publication.
Day 1 completion check
- One idea
- One intended person
- One intended value
- One uncertainty
- One scope boundary
Carry the completed Sprint Flame Statement into Day 2.
