Audacity Import, Export & FFmpeg Workflow
A project file and an audio export are not the same thing. Save the Audacity project when you need to continue editing. Export audio when you need a file to publish, send, master elsewhere or archive as finished audio.
Project vs export
The Audacity project preserves edits, clips and adjustable project state. A WAV, MP3, FLAC or other export is rendered audio for another application or listener.
Common workflow
- Import or record source audio.
- Save the project to reliable local storage.
- Edit and process.
- Save/version the project.
- Export a lossless master when quality preservation matters.
- Create compressed delivery copies only when the destination needs them.
FFmpeg
Audacity requires FFmpeg for various additional formats including M4A and WMA. MP3 support is built into current Audacity on Windows and macOS; older tutorials that tell every user to install LAME for MP3 export are outdated.
Archive logic
- Original source: never overwrite it.
- Audacity project: editable production state.
- Lossless master: final high-quality rendered audio.
- Delivery copy: MP3/M4A/other format matched to destination.
Storage warning
Audacity advises against keeping active projects on external, USB or network storage because recording/editing needs fast uninterrupted disk access. Back up projects, but do not confuse backup storage with the best active-work location.
