AUDACITY RESTORATION

Audacity Audio Restoration Workflow: Hiss, Hum, Clicks, Pops, Vinyl, Cassette & Field Audio

Restoration is diagnosis before processing. Different defects need different tools, and the best repair is usually the smallest one that makes the recording usable without stripping away wanted sound.

Route the symptom

• Single click/pop: local Repair.
• Repeated clicks: Click Removal.
• Steady broadband hiss: Noise Reduction using a representative noise-only profile.
• Narrow hum or whistle: inspect frequency and consider Notch Filter.
• Noise mainly between phrases: Noise Gate may help.
• Clipping: lowering volume afterward does not recreate lost peaks; source replacement or dedicated clip repair may be needed.
• Changing warble/distortion: broad noise reduction may be the wrong tool.

Preservation workflow

1. Digitize or import the best available source.
2. Keep an untouched archival copy.
3. Work on a duplicate/project version.
4. Repair local defects before broad processing.
5. Use spectral analysis when the problem is easier to see by frequency than waveform.
6. A/B every major repair against the source.
7. Export a restored master separately from the archive.

Restoration is not only for AI music

The same Audacity tools can help with old records, cassette transfers, interviews, field recordings, oral histories, voice memos, live recordings, sound effects and damaged creator assets.
