What Happens After You Stop Looking?

A viral story about Stan Lee and the Hulk led me somewhere unexpected: into afterimages, complementary color, old visual-gazing practices and a question every visual creator should understand — how much of an image is actually happening inside the viewer?

The reel that started this

I was scrolling Instagram when a Black man shared a personal recollection of meeting Stan Lee at a Chicago comic convention in the 1980s. He connected that memory to the Hulk, race, resilience and the character's famous green color.

I'm treating that part for what it is: his recollection of a conversation he says he experienced. This article is not an attempt to put that memory on trial.

What grabbed me was what he asked viewers to do next: stare at the image, then look away or close your eyes and notice what the colors become.

That sent me looking for the visual phenomenon underneath the story.

Try it before I explain it

The 30-Second Afterimage Test

Keep your eyes on the small black dot in the center of the colored panel for about 20–30 seconds. Then immediately move your gaze to the black dot in the white panel beside it. Don't force an answer. Just notice what your visual system does.

Note: experiences vary. Some people see a vivid complementary afterimage; others see something faint or nothing obvious on the first attempt. Stop if staring causes discomfort.

So, what did your eyes just do?

A negative color afterimage is a visual impression that appears after the original colored stimulus is removed. Researchers can reliably produce and measure the effect. Fixating on a colored pattern can leave a similarly shaped impression in a different — often roughly complementary — color once the stimulus disappears.

Recent work also makes an important correction to the simple classroom version of the story: the resulting hue is not always a perfect opposite on a basic color wheel. The exact afterimage depends on visual adaptation, the inducing color, context and individual variation.

The part that is established: stare at strong color long enough and your visual system can keep producing a color experience after the original stimulus is gone.

That is already more interesting than calling it a trick. The blank surface is not supplying those colors. Your visual system is.

Does green literally become brown?

The reel makes a very specific claim about what viewers may see after staring at the Hulk's green skin. The broader afterimage effect is real. The exact color any one viewer perceives is less simple.

Studies measuring afterimage hue show that some inducing colors produce results that differ significantly from a mathematically perfect complementary color. So if you try the experiment and see brownish, reddish, purple, pink, grey or something else, that does not mean you performed it incorrectly.

That variability is part of the phenomenon worth observing.

Where it gets stranger

People were deliberately working with complementary colors long before Instagram

This is where the reel opened a second door for me.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an influential Western esoteric organization of the late nineteenth century, used what it called “flashing colours.” In one of its historical instructional texts, a “flashing tablet” is described as being made with complementary colors: red with green, blue with orange, yellow with violet, and other paired combinations.

The Golden Dawn gave those effects a spiritual interpretation involving forces, currents and ritual practice. Modern vision science gives us a physiological account of afterimages and adaptation.

Those are different explanations.

But what interests me as a visual creator is that the practice itself recognized that sustained attention to carefully chosen colors can create a powerful internal visual experience.

Seeing is one question. Meaning is another.

1. Experience

A person sees an afterimage, color shift or lingering form.

2. Mechanism

Vision science studies adaptation and how the visual system produces the effect.

3. Meaning

Culture, spirituality and personal belief influence what someone thinks the experience signifies.

One layer does not automatically prove the next. But neither does explaining a visual mechanism erase the meaning someone may personally draw from experiencing it.

Why comic books are perfect for this conversation

Comic books have always understood something fundamental about perception: color changes meaning before a character says a word.

Imagine Batman in cheerful pastel yellow. Spider-Man without red and blue. The Hulk without green. You could preserve the pose, muscles and line art and still change the emotional read almost instantly.

Comics exaggerate color because comics do not have to reproduce reality. They can interpret it. Radiation can be green. Danger can be red. Mystery can be purple. Shadow can swallow half a face. A palette can become as recognizable as a logo.

That makes superhero art a useful laboratory for every visual creator — including people making characters, covers, thumbnails, album art, worlds and AI-generated images today.

The Hulk is a masterclass in visual identity

The Hulk began publication as a grey character and became green very early in his history. Whatever later interpretations audiences bring to that change, the result is undeniable as visual branding: green became inseparable from Hulk.

You can reduce a famous character to a silhouette, a palette and one or two defining shapes and still recognize them.

Five lessons for visual creators

1. Color is not decoration

A strong palette can carry identity, emotion, category and narrative before text enters the frame.

2. Contrast creates energy

Complementary and near-complementary colors can create tension that feels almost active. Use that power selectively instead of making every element compete.

3. The viewer completes the image

Your audience brings memory, expectation, culture and a living visual system to the work. Design for an experience, not merely an object.

4. A visual can keep working after it disappears

Afterimages are the literal version of a larger creative truth: memorable visual decisions linger.

5. Experiment before you explain

When possible, let people experience the idea first. That creates curiosity. Then give them language for what happened.

How to design an afterimage experiment

  1. Choose a simple subject. Strong shapes work better than visual clutter.
  2. Use saturated colors. Test complementary and near-complementary combinations.
  3. Add one fixation point. Give the eye somewhere stable to remain.
  4. Create a neutral reveal area. White or light grey makes the lingering impression easier to notice.
  5. Test 15, 20 and 30 seconds. More time is not automatically better.
  6. Test with different people. Record what they actually report instead of telling them what they are supposed to see.

For AI image creators, this is a much more interesting prompt exercise than “make a cool optical illusion.” Build variants, change one visual variable at a time and study how perception changes.

Can staring at an image make something manifest?

This is where I separate the reproducible visual effect from the larger interpretation.

I found strong evidence for color afterimages and historical evidence for complementary-color visual practices. I did not find controlled scientific evidence showing that producing an afterimage causes money, an open door, an opportunity or another imagined object to physically manifest.

Someone can still use visualization spiritually, symbolically, motivationally or meditatively. But that is a different claim from demonstrating that color adaptation itself alters external physical reality.

A better question than “Is it magic?” might be:
When a physical phenomenon and a spiritual practice produce the same subjective experience, how do you decide what that experience means?

Try it. Then tell me what you actually saw.

Don't tell me what the reel said you should see. Don't tell me what a textbook said you should see.
