Listen to how individual notes move
If shared notes stay in place and other voices move by small steps, transitions can feel connected. Larger leaps can create a more obvious change. Neither is automatically better.
How often the chords change matters
A progression can feel static because the harmony changes too slowly—or frantic because it changes too often—even when the chord choices are good.
The lead line can redefine the chord
